In the fall of 1958 the students were given the privilege to select the school colors and name the school mascot. The two choices came down to black & gold (Iowa Hawkeye colors) or scarlet & silver. The winner was Scarlet & Silver and the mascot name chosen was the Warriors.

In May 1959 the first graduating class of South Winneshiek was thirty two students . It took a year to organize the bussing routes from the four towns. The second class was fifty two students graduating the following year.

Additional space was required so on July 3, 1959 a special School bond election was held. A sum of $440,000 was requested to add a new building and modifies the existing facility. The bond was approved and the construction was completed,

As of 2019 the South Winneshiek High School has been operating for sixty years. This information was compiled from the 1959 proposed bond, the 1959 year book and history as I remember it. I was a student of the 1960 graduating class.
